Going far with your passions require you to step out of your comfort zone.
As a dancer, I’ve always aimed to be versatile. Settling with my skill set and knowledge simply wasn’t an option. In fact the goal was always to be better than what I was yesterday. I suppose it does sound idealistic but it’s a stepping stone. In order to live up to this belief, I have devised ways to ensure I was maximizing my potential in dancing.
Keep your eyes forward
There’s nothing more nerve wracking than having all eyes on you. However, being a dancer or a performer or a competitor you’re compelled to act in front of a live audience whether it may be during a performance or in a class.
It won’t help if you notice people’s reactions because, no doubt, they’re full of judgments. But here’s the thing, you don’t have to look at them. You just have to focus on yourself. When in a dance class, look at yourself in the mirror and see for yourself how you’re doing. When in a production, be aware of your group and steps — not the crowd. When in a competition, keep your eyes on the prize — I mean, on the judge.
Explore
Though movement can be universal, dancing is personal. There’s always something new to learn from every choreographer, new style, techniques, and insights. So enroll in dancing classes, volunteer/audition for shows, join competitions/battles, or be a part of your school’s dance club.
All these places are sources for better exposure to dancing. You will not only become better at your craft but you’ll also get to make friends and possibly travel.
Lose yourself
Now that you’ve got everything in control, let it go. Mastering the skill to move your body at your will is great, don’t get me wrong. But dancing is also about moving to the flow of the music — losing yourself in the rhythm and melody. Not only that but it allows you to enjoy the moment and have fun.
There are times you need to have control, but important skills such as grooving and freestyling are rooted to “feeling the moment”.
